On the outskirts of Lone Tree, CA, between the town and Mt. Whitney, there is a semi-desert badlands filledwith trails, eroded rock formations and memories of classic movies shoot here--Gunga Dinm for example, and about half of the grade B westerns; a movie museum in town has feature films. This is great hiking territory but a car makes sightseeing easiest.... More

Handy from Lone Pine and some good opportunities for sunrise images. You need to be there early ! Watch the terrain as the stone is absolutely horrible if you accidentally land on it !

Actually, the rock formations are so unique they are very difficult to describe. That's why one should experience them firsthand! Can you picture immense mounds of huge (truck-sized) rounded boulders, piled atop the desert sand? Piles of boulders, mazes of boulders, downright weird formations, etc. It's cartoonish - Flintstonesesque. The Alabama Hills are nothing like the Sierra Nevada, just a... More

We just happened upon this when stopping in Lone Pine while visiting Death Valley. What a wonderful area! We took a short hike to the arch and took some picures, but since it was cold and breezy, we drove around and enjoyed the beauty and history of the place. We would have liked to drive up the road towards Mt.... More

Worth a trip to the arches and driving around to see all the places where many movies have been shot. We took about 2 hours to drive and walk around. There are some great rock formations and the mountains behind. Easy drive from Lone Pine.

Tons and tons of photographic opportunities. Did some night shots by full moonlight. Looks like mid-day except the millions of stars in the sky. Great sunrise on Mt Whitney.

We drove through the Alabama hills with our three children ages 5,7,9. We picked up a map of the hills at our hotel that listed both sites where movies were filmed and on the back the names and locations of interesting formations. Of course i left the map at the hotel, but that didnt stop us from enjoying ourselves. The... More

It's fun to see the scenery on old movies that are the Alabama Hills.

The best part of the Alabama Hills is not movie road. On that road, we drove only a short distance before getting bored and turning around. However, we had a nice time driving along Tuttle Creek Road, which meanders through huge rocks that you can practically touch if you open your car windows. We reached Tuttle Creek from Lubken Canyon... More
