If you only have half a day in Monterey (and you are not travelling with small children) I would recommend you visit La Mirada museum before you go to the omnipresent Monterey Bay aquarium. Monterey Museum of Art is really two museums in different locations. LaMirada, is just outside of downtown, in a lovely historic mansion, while the other is on Pacific St. is near the historic section of town. Both are lovely places with very good art collections. One our recent visit there was a free jazz concert as well as Matisse cutouts... more
