Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa.The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins.

We came here to go to the museum. The Winery itself is beautiful. We could have stayed outside all day. The museum itself was interesting and peculiar. It wasn't my taste of art I suppose. We didn't go wine tasting, after spending the entire day before doing that.

By any standard the building and grounds are very nice. I wasn't impressed by the wine (subjective on my part). It is off the beaten winery track, and if you are returning to the Sonoma Valley (as we did) from there, try to get your GPS to take you on the main roads. The back road is narrow with steep...

A beautiful winery set on a hillside in Napa, Hess is in a beautiful location. Although we weren't too impressed by the wines we tasted, the art collection and winery itself is worth the visit.

There is just so much wine that you can taste and neither of us was interested in the round-robin winery tours. The Hess winery has an excellent collection of modern art in a museum attached to the winery. It is free and you do not have to take the optional wine tour. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with lily ponds...

You might find the gallery a bit odd unless you keep and open mind. The staff give you a free but brief tour of the winery and history about the vines and previous owners of the land/vines and the winery processing. After the tour you get to watch a video about the winery (just ok). They also have wine tasting,...

This isn't a typical winery where you're going to just come to sample the grapes, but rather an experience for all of the senses. The winery is interesting, but is eclipsed by the wonderful artwork that is available for the visitor to enjoy. Even the outdoor garden and walkways are a treat for the senses.
