The 50-minute guided walking tour descends a series of stairs and walkways that loop around the formation covered caverns walls. Here, flowstones interspersed with stalactites, draperies and helictites compete for space above the stairways. Above ground activities: gemstone mining, nature hike, picnic tables. School program available. Open every day, year round. « less

I enjoyed a wonderful outing at this attraction. The tour takes about 45 minutes and the guides are well informed as well as entertaining. After the tour, be sure to browse the rock shop which is pricey, but the quality if the minerals is excellent. Make sure to buy a bag of gravel and use the slew to rinse away... More

While traveling off of highway 49 I took a detour to the little town of Volcano and then a few miles further stopped at the Black Chasm Cavern to see what they had to offer. I found the kiosk to be manned by helpful staff and the decent into the chasm was well moderated by a very informed guide who... More

Our young son had a blast, and so did we! Make sure you check it out. We made the special trip to Volcano to see this cavern.

To think, caverns like these can be found in the central Sierra Mtns. of California?...wonderful. Nestled just outside of the tiny town of Volcano, CA you will find this really cool underground gem. The tour is about 45 minutes. The temperature is always around 55 degrees inside. The staircases make it easily accessible. Tours are given at the top of... More

What we cannot readily see is sometimes well worth the effort to seek out and experience! Black Chasm Cavern is one of those experiences. This 50 minute tour is truly fascinating and educational for all ages. Descending into this vertical cave on very well constructed stairways and platforms presents one with an illuminating world of rare, uniquely shaped helictite formations... More

Really interesting VERTICAL cave ( up & down ) vs typical horizontal cave. They recently put in nice safe stairs that make you feel more secure. Our guide (Jessica?) was very good. There are really intersting formations and a big room at the end. There is also a underground lake waaaaaay down (70 feet?) that you can see from the... More

We went in off season and were lucky to get a private tour. Our young tour guide was full of facts and enthusiasm. We would recommend it.
