We have been to this museum around 5 times. It has been great for the kids and we enjoy it too. There is always someone to talk to about the trains or the time period- what the train was used for in its heyday. Always a nice stop.

It's a world class museum. The number of trains is very impressive and the displays are first rate.
Hard to believe Sacramento has something that is considered 'Best in the World," however once you see this place, you would agree!
It is a must that you start your adventure with the mini-movie regarding the history of the United States intercontinental railroad and how Sacramento had a huge investment in its success. The ending of the film is timed...

How great to see some wonderful restored locomotives, rolling stock etc. displayed in such creative ways.

The museum is looks a bit like a round house and is full of full-size engines and rail cars. A bit of history is offered with each display. Upstairs there's an exhibit of toy trains and you can look down on the full-size trains.
it was a very reasonably priced experience, beautifully laid out old trains, with really helpful volunteers who were more than happy to help. the sleeper car and dining car were really interesting.
Awesome for kids with the big engines you can touch and get right next to!
If you want a trip back to a time when railway travel was the only way, you won't want to miss this museum. Wear comfortable shoes because you will want to spend time looking at everything!!
Our grandson loved the second floor miniature train display. I had to be pried away from the historical materials and a chance to clamber in and out of real train cars, including the fully made-up for dinner dining car. And we all loved the gift shop so much we decided to become members and get the 10% discount. Bring the...
