The wines here are sometimes hit or miss, but the tasting can't be beat. The "Terrace Tasting" takes place outdoors on a covered, elevated patio with gorgeous, sweeping views that overlook the vineyard landscape. We showed up on a whim on January 2nd to buy some Insignia 2004. Although we knew reservations were required to taste, we did not plan to taste and hoped we could get to the retail section. Phelps Winery is famous for Insignia, one of the best Cabernets from Napa. They also make great Syrah, a blend LeMistral, and many great white wines. Phelps is in an absolutely beautiful part of Napa Valley (I have been twice, both during summertime). Though my tastings did not involve any sort of winery tour, the wines are truly superb and the view parallels the one from Auberge.
