I always recommend stopping to see the Elephant Seals here on your way to Big Sur. An amazing piece of natural wildlife on the California Coast, and easy to access right off the highway.

You actually don't quite believe what you're looking at. I had read there are mainly a lot of elephant seals through Feb, but during our May stop, we were not disappointed. There are so many. The males fight a lot. It's interesting to see how fights get started. (One seal with bite the foot of another, so that one moves...

When in about 1980 the seals began returning to the beach they owned for hundreds of years, the result was massive conflict. Tourists walked among, and occasionally hassled, the seals, and the seals occasionally lumbered across State Route 1, with occasionally disastrous results.

We thought we were going to make a quick stop here but ended up staying about 45 minutes. It was great to just watch the seals. There were so many of them. I was amazed.
It was incredible being so close to elephant seals! They are quite the sight.
This is a great little place for a stop if you're driving California's Cabrillo Highway. For the amount of effort involved (pulling off into the large parking lot and walking a few steps to the viewing areas) the payoff is huge. We were there in January which was the perfect time to see tons of baby elephant seals that were...

OK, we had seen the pictures so we knew what to expect. But we didn't really expect to see wall to wall elephant seals all up and down a very long beach! We were amazed by how many there were! So great to be in the midst of nature! The family of seals on the beach is a site to see. Awesome ocean rocks too.
Beautiful scenery. Bring a warm jacket for the chilly wind.
When seen from the south, the rocks are quite striking. The elephant seals are also worth a look (and a listen). One of my favorite things there is the old, closed Point Piedras Blancas Motel. Very blue, very white on a sunny day. Take a photo.
