The creative manifestation of St. Louis industrialist George Fox Steedman, Casa del Herrero (House of the Blacksmith)reflects the visionary passions of its 'dream team' of designers: reknowned architect, George Washington Smith, landscape architects Lockwood de Forest and Francis T. Underhill, and antiquarians Arthur Byne and Mildred Stapley, who also helped outfit the well-known Hearst Castle.Tours are available mid-February through mid-November on Wednesdays and Saturdays by advance reservation. « less

Casa del Herrero is a 1925 Spanish Colonial Revival house designed by the King of Santa Barbara revival architecture, Geo Washington Smith. It is not a huge house, but everything is original, every room full of interesting architectural details, objects, furniture. The tour spends more time in the garden, rightly so. The garden is not a botanical garden, but more of... More

The tour of the Casa del Herrero in Montecito is definitely worth the $20 price of admission. Reservations are important as they only allow 12 in a group on Wednesday and Saturday. The guide we had was extremely thorough in explaining the history of the estate and the gardens. Both are lovely. The casa appears the same as it did... More

This one of the most beautifully preserved houses in Montecito. The gardens are magical and the house has not been changed. All original Spanish decor. Definitely worth a visit.

We love touring historic homes. This one reminded us of the Adamson House in Malibu. A very interesting home and lovely grounds. At 90 minutes, the docent tour seems about 30 minutes longer than necessary -- an uncomfortably long period to stand, and past endurance in terms of attention span. Too bad, because there truly is a lot of interest... More

Tour was fun and the house was gorgeous if you like that period. The gardens are a real treat, reminded me of the Allahambra in Granada. If you like house tours also try the Adamson House in Malibu, a riot of maliub tile and located right where the river meets the ocean, that was a gorgeous on many levels.
