Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

You can go for a long hike here, taking advantage of the lovely open space that is close to the urbanized area.

We first went to Borges Ranch, which is part of the Shell Ridge Open Space. From there there are hills and vista views. This is a good area for hiking.

Great neighborhood resource. Lots of looping trails where you can walk for as little or as long as you want. One can hike to Borges ranch or all the the way to Mt Diablo state park. Generally their are other people and friendly dogs around. Just be careful of the rattlesnakes during the spring and summer months. I’ve come across them sunning themselves on the trail during the day.

There is a system of trails with a mixture of flat and elevation options. It's very safe but I would still use the buddy system. It is not uncommon to see a coyote or a rare rattlesnake. You will see others walking about, trail runners, mountain bikers, and riders with their horses. I would highly recommend it.

This is one of my favorite places to walk. Generally a dog-friendly off leash environment, but be careful of the mountain bikers and wildlife! I've seen snakes, coyotes, bobcats. In the summer there are rattlesnakes about, especially near the rocky outcroppings. During wet years some water in the low areas but be wary of water quality. Beautiful year round but especially fall through late spring. Spring is the best time to visit. Multiple loop trails to make either a short (1-2 miles) or long hike (10+ miles). Gorgeous views on a clear day if you walk the ridge trail. Beautiful shady walk down along the stream bed. Best loop is to start at the Marshall drive entrance, take a left, hike up the ridge, loop down to the stream (there are a few routes down off the ridge, the one at the very end is steep-if it is too much for you loop back and look for the alternate trail down )Follow the stream trail back to the entrance. Kids will like finding sea shell fossils in the rocks. Bring water and hiking shoes, trails will be slippery when wet. Good bird watching, views, good for dogs.

I love walking/hiking but this isn't the best place. I have heard stories of people seeing wildlife such as mountain lions and such. Be alert and aware of your surroundings over here.

There are a lot of trails for hiking and Spring is the best time - all green and lush! Try the trails to Borges Ranch especially with children.

I head out to the hills of Shell Rdge at least twice a week to let my dog roam freely. There are many trails to chose from and it's easy to hike a 2 mile loop or turn it into an all day hike. The terrain is varied and there are many different points of entry.

Tucked away at the end of a bucolic neighborhood, this open space affords a little piece of Solitude in an otherwise densely populated city. There are a multitude of types of hikes and walks that people of all ages can take. These include walking along the ridge to see the local mountains, walking through a ravine see in a plesant forested ares, and a very relatively easy walk through the main part of the park to the top of a hill where one can see the hills to the east and the valleys to the west.
For the more adventurous, one can take a fairly extensive hike to explore eben further through the open space which extends for some distance and connects with Mount Diablo State Park, thereby really discovering the pleasures of Shell Ridge.
