My husband and I just returned from the annual Photo Tour on the train. You take the train to Silverton, spend the night and return the next day. (There is an option to take the bus one way) Along the way, the train stops several times, passengers get off, the train backs up and does what is called a run-by... more

What a delightful trip. We road the Animas CInco--last car on the train and had great views. Our hostess, Heather, was very knowledeable informing us of points of interest before we passed them up. You can get some great shots of the train when it goes around a bend. We took the bus back which took us on the Million... more

Our group had a great time on the old steam locomotive. We had a great day for chugging up the Animas River valley. In late September the leaves were starting to turn a golden yellow. I loved the river- I could have sat all day and watched it go by. If you have train lovers in your family, this one... more

My family recently visited Durango and decided to do the raft and rail combo package. I am so glad we did! It includes half day of rafting (either morning or afternoon) and then the other half is spent on the train. There were 3 of us who wanted to ride the train to and from Silverton - each way is... more

We took the full trip on the Durango Silverton railroad and loved every minute of it. We were in the SIlver Vista car (open on the sides) and even though it rained (actually it poured) on the way back, we had a wonderful time! Our trip included a hat, and beverages - they serve alcohol on the train, so on... more

I'm fortunate to have visited many countries in the Western Hemisphere. I have experienced multiple, extended trips to Disneyland and Walt Disney World. I consider riding the Durango & Silverton Railroad among my top vacation experiences. It helps that I'm somewhat of a railroad geek, but you don't have to be such a person to thoroughly enjoy this ride through... more

Our family (2 adults, 3 teens) rode the train from Silverton to Durango and loved it. We used a tour company that used vans to drive us to Silverton, 4-wheeled for a while and then sent us back to Durango on board the train. It was a fantastic experience. My teenagers loved this adventure. While I'm sure we would have... more

If you are any type of adventurous person at all, you will love the Durango to Silverton train ride. My wife and I took the trip in July of this year (2008), and it was simply awesome. The scenery is more than fantastic, and the journey exciting to say the least. The sights, the sounds and the smells give you... more

We heeded the reviews here and rode the bus to Silverton and the train back to Durango. Our bus driver was funny and interesting, and the scenery was beautiful and different from what we saw from the train. Silverton itself is a charming, if incredibly touristy, little town nestled among gorgeous mountains. The Victorian buildings are original and quaint. My... more

Rode the train today and thought I'd sum up my opinions while still fresh! I read the other reviews prior to riding and will emphasize which were great/legitimate advice... A) It is a long, non-narrated train ride (3.5 hrs) - do not consider if you are a type-A personality and cannot sit still that long. It's a fantastic experience for... more
