This is a place that isn't for everyone, but if you are looking for solitude and quiet, you should make the trip! There is hiking available out to the Pawnee Buttes now, but part of the area is closed due to nesting of Hawks, Eagles and Falcon's on the rock escarpements. Still a lot of light pollution for viewing stars... More

The Grasslands provide a unique alternative to the mountains, with an amazing degree of remoteness if you explore a little. The eastern sections of the grasslands are farther from the Front Range and more tranquil. There can be lots of target shooters in the western sections, particularly on weekends. North of New Raymer will take you to quieter sections for... More

Everyone should visit the Pawnee Buttes, and get a sense of what the prairie is like without people. It is also a great place to contemplate what our fore-people saw as they crossed the plains in covered wagons. We love to take a picnic there and just take in the wide open spaces. Big sky isn't just in Montana!

I live in nearby Greeley and visit at least every couple of months. I go primarily to look for pronghorn antelope in the area north and west of Briggsdale. Sometimes I see none, one times I saw herds of 12 and 25. Usually I see solo or pairs of antelope. The Pawnee buttes are fairly isolated and on one approach... More

Sure, everyone goes to the mountains in CO, but the Pawnee National Grasslands are well worth a day. Get a map/directions, pack a picnic lunch or dinner, and head out. You have never heard such silence, except for the wind and the raptors. You can even still see ruts from the pioneer's wagons. It's a different view of Colorado, and... More

Other reviewers seem to be a bit jaded. if you want the ULTIMATE camping experience go to Yellowstone. If you want the ULTIMATE photographic experience go to Yosemite! The grasslands are just that grasslands. It is a look back in time to a day when a trapper, on his way to the Rockies might have witnessed a small group of... More

But, at least compared to southeastern Colorado, there's a lot more green. This is ranch land, with an occasional oil well pumping...and an increasing number of wind turbines. Yes, a bit on the scenic side. The "big" attraction is Pawnee Buttes -- two adjacent buttes that rise above the rolling topography. It takes dirt roads to get to the buttes,... More

Took my family there to camp overnight, we found some trees and setup camp nearby. I think they were the only trees for thousands of acres. It was during the rainy season, and by evening the wind had ripped a few holes in my new tent, and we saw huge HUGE thunderclouds coming with lots of lightning. Being all alone... More
