We rented a jeep in Ouray to drive up here. Do NOT take a two-wheel drive vehicle to Yankee Boy or you are likely to get stuck with a flat tire or two--we passed two disabled 2WD cars that tried to make it. Great waterfalls and wildflowers, and opportunities for short hikes on foot. I'd recommend hiking up to Wright's... more

I was told by locals that this is most famous destination for being rich in wild flowers. This being our first time, took a jeep tour (Switzerland of America) to Yankee Boy Basin. Me and my husband decided to rent a jeep and drive ourselves on the Yankee Boy Basin four-wheel road. It was FANTASTIC!! The jaw-dropping awesome mountain peaks, flowers, old historic ruins of mines, mills and Sneffels ghost town. This was our first time to rent a jeep and do something like this. My family and I go to the San Juan mountians every year for the 4-wheeling in the area. Yankee boy basin far out ways even american basin with the amount and varity of flowers. We choose not to hike in to the basin but it would be well worth the effort. You could rent a jeep in silverton and drive... more
