Zwaanendael Museum is housed in a wonderful, Dutch-style brick building adjacent to the town park in picturesque Lewes, DE. The museum if free and has many great exhibits and artifacts relating to the founding of Delaware and the history of Lewes. If you're a history buff, you won't be disappointed!

The best part of this museum is its free. So to me its worth stopping and learning a little local history and it doesn't cost anything. Its not very big and can be completed with in a half hour. I recommend it if you are interested in history but if your not then I wouldn't bother.

An interesting history, beginning in 1631 clearly presented in exhibits in a historic museum copied from a similar building in Holland. Well-informed docents were on both floors, eager to be helpful and easily able to answer our few questions.

See the great display on horseshoe crabs and the amazing migration of the red knots. Don't miss the spooky little mer-man.

My husband is Dutch and was especially interested in the Dutch-style gables with memorabilia evoking the local history. The building itself is modeled after the old Stadthuis (town hall) in Hoorn, the Netherlands. It was very very interesting. The museum attendant was a retired history teacher and we had a long conversation with him. He really knew what is was... More

The building was built in 1931 to honor the 300th anniversary of Delaware's first European settlement which was founded in 1631. It is modeled after the the town hall in Hoom, the Netherlands. The museum has exhibits that focus on the maritime and social history of the Lewes area. There are some interesting hands-on exhibits and you can even try... More

You will find enough to distract and/or educate you here for a bit - but don't expect anything comprehensive or enlightening. None of us felt it really told us the story of the settlement - the most I learned had to do with fishnets. The staff was friendly and willing to engage. We popped in because of the rain. The... What an unexpected delight. We passed this tiny museum, commemorating the first Dutch 1631 settlement, when leaving the Lewes Saturday Farmer’s Market. We came back to get a closer look at the building which is modeled after the town hall in Hoorn, Netherlands. We figured we would only spend a moment inside this free museum; were we ever wrong! We... More
