This area was part of the coastal defenses, with observation towers still in tact for touring. Locating an enemy ship by "triangulation" from the towers, the fort and big guns would be engaged to take it out. (system never had to be actually engaged in combat).

My sister had read they were moving via rail one of the "Big Guns" from the USS Missouri to be displayed @ Fort Miles. It was great to see this piece of history. There are other "Guns" on display and barracks are there too (empty, nothing on display inside).

See the original R&R barracks, along with many of the guns from naval ships that patrolled our coast line. Climb the Observations Tower and see all the way to NJ.

What a great historical tour. It takes almost 2 hours to experience it. Totally amazing the way this bunker was completely restored by all volunteers.

We took the Ft. Miles guided tour which included the Bunker. The volunteers were amazing - dedicated, knowledgable, and patient with us as we asked many, many questions. Touring Ft. Miles is free, however the guided tours are charged a nominal fee - our tour was only $3.00 per person.

We loved the WWII look out towers. The beaches and surrounding are much more low keyed than the boardwalk area further south.

Interesting restored World War II costal fortifications. Inside Cape Henlopen State Park. Preservation is well done. Includes a concrete artillery battery, complete with 12” coastal artillery piece. Several other artillery pieces are on display. Also includes an observation tower that provides a great view of the Delaware Bay; Cape May, NJ can be seen in the distance. Tour is well... More

We took the battery tour, which lasted about 2 hours and was a welcome relief from the 90 degree tempearature outside. It cost $5.00. The guided tour takes you around the fort and finally inside one of the massive batteries that were constructed during World War II. The guide was knowledgable and seemed passionate about the history of the area.... More
