We just went on the nine mile "scenic" drive through the refuge and saw nothing but trees and brush. The only wildlife we saw were the vultures having a feast on the side of the road. We then walked the shell mound trail, which was very short, and again, unimpressive. I can't help but think we must be missing something... More

My wife and I have often visited the boardwalk and nature drive at the Lower Suwanee WR. the rangers are superbly helpful. The Shell Mound portion of the Refuge Area though has it all! the short Archaeological Trail over the shell mound itself is fascinating with a prehistoric feel. We also love the delightful Dennis Trail and the little Fiddler... More

If you are wanting an AWESOME ride in the woods this is for you. On this trip you have a good chance of seeing LOTS of Florida animals. Anywhere from different kinds of birds, crabs, alligators, turtles, snakes, pigs, deer, etc. About 15 minutes from town, but very easy to find. Now most of these animals you have to be... More

This is a really nice natural park. We saw birds from barred owls to bald eagles. Lots of turtles too. Being avid hikers though it would of been nice to have more and longer hiking trails. The staff at the lower suwanne hq was excellent.

The employees were so nice and welcoming. We learned where to view birds and how to take the loop drive for animal viewing. Unfortunately, it started raining. We didn't see any animals. I wish we could have visited Shell Mound. The Bat House was definitely occupied; we heard lots of squealing in it. If the time is right, this is... More

There's a 9 mile nature drive that shows you what "real" Florida looks like. A beautiful drive.

The trails at the shell mound site were great, and further north the river trail was scenic, but would skip the loop drive, very poor road and not much wildlife. To be fair, it was January and cold, plus a lot of dead vegetation from earlier freeze

You never know what you'll see here. Deer, gators, raccoons, wild turkey, wood storks, blue herons, egrets and more. The shell mound is spectacular! Close to Cedar Key and free. Boat launch ramp and fishing pier. Take some insect repellant, though.
