If you're planning a trip to Dry Tortugas, seriously consider getting there with Seaplanes of Key West on the 8am flight. It'll cost you more than the ferry, but you'll have the island to yourself for about 2 hours - enough time to tour the fort, snorkel and laze on the beach. It is a great way to get to the Dry Tortugas in 40 minutes, well in advance or after the bigger mob coming with the 2.5h one way boat trip. I'm a Key West veteran who for years had resisted the trip to the Dry Tortugas...error! By all means go and see this magnificent fort, and do go by the seaplane! We took the first flight out to the island and I wouldn't recommend it any other way. The whole time we were snorkeling, there was a grand total of 3 people in the water.
