I really enjoy the history of old buildings and old structures so I thought it would be a neat idea to catch a boat to Pigeon Key and learn a little about the building of the Florida Keys Overseas Highway. I got way more than I bargained for. The ticket booth is big red train car on Knights Key/Marathon. Thought... More

This is a great place to understand how the keys were connected by rail. John Flagler engineered and paid for a train that began in New York, went to St. Augustine, FL then eventually to Palm Beach, Miami, etc. He then decided that people should have access to the keys. Pigeon Key is where he housed the workers who built... More

Great for a stroll or bike down pedestrian bridge. A bit of history. Romantic too.

At the northern entrance to the seven mile bridge from Marathon, Fl to the lower Keys is the visitor center for Pigeon Key. This Key was the staging and living area for workers who built the first railway connection from the Florida mainland to Key West. Henry Flagler was unsuccessful in securing federal funding and proceeded on his own. An... More

My family and I went to Pigeon Key in July 2011 and had a great time. We bought our tickets in a railroad car just off US-1. The ticketing staff showed very little interest in their jobs, but thankfully they were the only ones like this we found. We caught a boat from the adjacent dock and the journey took... More

Part of the history of the Keys - the story of the rail link from Miami to Key West is fascinating and this trip is a great way to learn about it. You take a boat to the island where there is a guide and a small museum and the chance to swim and snorkel too. I haven't been with... More

Pigeon Key is a world away from the traffic and tourists of the Florida Keys. We purchased our tickets in the converted railcar and took the 5 minute ferry boat ride to our own private island. The tour, displays and buildings are incredibly interesting and the site is gorgeous to stroll around. You can picnic, snorkel or just relax under... More

I just happened to stop on the way back from Key West to Miami right after the Seven Mile bridge and found out about this key. The trip out to the key was only $11 which included the boat trip out to the island and a presentation by the staff and a tour of the island. There was also a... More
