    Wonderful experience!
If you are looking for a fun and educational outing for the whole family, you should definitely visit Kasteel Hoensbroek in Heerlen. This is one of the most beautiful, best preserved and most accessible castles in Europe. The children can go on an exciting discovery tour where they discover 10 special places in the castle and do all kinds of fun games and tasks. The castle was built in 1360 and has a rich history. You can admire beautiful halls, rooms, cellars and towers filled with antique furniture, paintings, weapons and armor. The castle is surrounded by a moat and set in a beautiful park. Kasteel Hoensbroek is highly recommended for anyone who loves history, culture and adventure. We had a great time there and will definitely be back!

Beautiful castle surrounded by water in scenic location.
On way to Maastrict, I stopped here to tour the castle. The tours are done in Dutch but luckily the guide was in English. I walked the tour indicated in the brochure and amazed at how the castle had expanded over the years. It was definitely worth the 15 euro!

    Great afternoon in Kasteel Hoensbroek
We started with a guided tour which was really good en informative, also for the younger once. After the guided tour we went and started the scavenger’s hunt which the kids (7 and 12) just loved! Unfortunately we ran out of time but we would love to try another one of the kids adventure tours through this beautifully restored and kept castle.

    Interesting
With a group on a tour bus. For some of the castle, there were significant number of steps to climb which ruled some of us out. There was a lift to some areas. Layout of the castle for tours could be improved on. Games in the courtyard was a novel idea. As happens with many castles, once you've seen one you have seen them all. The water surround made it slightly different.

Excellent castle with good English resources
We had an excellent day at the castle. We purchased tickets online (the website is in English, which were cheaper than the ticket office, although we did therefore need to book a time slot. We also purchased a children’s quest for €2. When we arrived, this turned out to be a booklet, in English, which directed the children around the castle and had a variety of different activities for them to complete. There were also activities and games in the courtyard for the children to do. Our children, aged 12 and 10 loved it all. The castle is a bit of a maze and there are a lot of steps, some steep and narrow, but that just made it more fun. We finished with a drink and ice cream in the courtyard cafe and, altogether, were there for five hours!

We spent four hours in the castle. If we had been allowed, we would have stayed there for a long time. But not in the dungeon!! 😆😆
What to do in the castle:
- listen to the gossip of the ladies of the court
- warm up with onion soup
- fly in the attic in a hot air balloon
- go through a quest with the children - draw your coat of arms and proudly ride on a horse
- get lost in rooms, stairs, turns, corridors
- shoot from bow
- and the most amazing thing is to watch knightly battles

Whilst the actual castle is glorious to look at, the admission cost of 29euro for 2 ppl was not worth it seeing there was only 1 part open and was not a great deal to see. have seen a lot better on our trip thru the Rhine at half the entry fee and offering more to see.
very dissappointed overall

Great castle, especially the oldest part is very interesting to see. Plenty to see and very good explanations of each room.

Reputedly one of the most beautiful castles in the Netherlands we had the pleasure of visiting it whilst it was almost empty of tourists. The tours are self-guided, with booklets in various languages including English so that you can understand the history of the castle, its previous inhabitants and the items and places you are seeing. It is interestingly furnished and decorated, and much care has been taken to entertain visiting children, with games to play and items to discover. Some parts of the castle, notably some internal staircases in the main tower are very narrow, steep and are likely to result in a crack on the head.
The tour took us around 90 minutes, and the castle is some 30 minutes outside of Maastricht.
