whether you love art or art house movies or just walking through a sculpture garden, the Art Center of Des Moines, IA, is a location you simply have to visit. There is a rose garden behind the Art Center and tucked inside the center is a small cafe that serves lunch, a gift shop/art store and there is a special... More

There's a lot to like about the Des Moines Art Center. The building complex, which has grown over the years, was designed by some of the most famous and talented architects of the 20th Century. The original, sandstone-clad structure was designed by Eliel Saarinenen, and reflects the sprawling soul of 1930s prairie-style architecture. I.M. Pei's sculpture wing combines robust cast-concrete... More

I have been to fabulous art centers around the world and always feel pleased to come home to this little gem. No better place to see top modern art.

This is a free stop. The art is great, the gift store is good, has some classes, and some food. it's clean, is going through some renovations so a bit more difficult to get into, so check first to be sure it's finished.

There is so much to see and do hands on for kids and adults. I bet not one person goes in there without learning at least one new thing before they come out. Plus all the fun especially that the kids have! Great for school field trips or just to take the kids and enjoy.

What a gem in Des Moines! Originally built in the late 1940's the museum has two additions thereby expanding the permanent collection and enabling the museum to showcase additional artists. Visiting the building alone is a nice experience. As to the permanent collection – it ranges from post-impressionist to modern, sculpture to large commissioned pieces. Taking our time—but not loitering... More

The collection is a surprise in its quality & diversity. Guests from around the world have always been impressed when I've taken them there. But what I like best is the beautiful natural setting for the distinctly different works of several major architects that all seem to work together despite the span of many years during which they were constructed.

The architecture (by 3 big names) is as interesting as the collection. A nice patio restaurant adds to the pleasure. Well curated and worth a detour west from downtown
