It's a fun trip to the top with great views. It hasn't changed fundamentally in all that time. Well worth the trip.
It appears very old and rickety, but actually the original 1882 elevator has been redone (several times) and is actually very safe and pleasant to ride in. Be aware though that they do close down right after Thanksgiving and won't reopen again until next spring. I am not good with heights, but this was so subtle and smooth and the... More
A simple fun ride up the bluff to a breathtaking view of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois of the east and west banks of the Mississippi River. Take a camera on the ride! You will get great shots! Especially colorful during the leaves change.
There is not a lot to do in Dubuque so we took advantage of the Fenelon Elevator. The entire experience takes no more than 30 minutes which includes taking pictures at the top of the ride. I nice piece of history for young and old.
This is the world's shortest and steepest railway. Nestled among art galleries and specialty shops it offers amazing views of downtown Dubuque, the Mississippi river as well as neighboring states Wisconsin and Illinois. Cost to ride only one dollar each way!
PROS: offers beautiful panoramic views of the city of Dubuque; cheap; quick but fulfilling stop; CONS: can be pretty crowded if boarding at the bottom; can be hard to find; the GPS had a difficult time routing me there. Might be difficult to board and disembark for individuals with weak or arthritic knees due to steep steps inside the cab.... More
A very interesting story behind this elevator up the steep bluff in Dubuque, worth a ride just for fun and it's priced right, but you don't need to set aside much time for it at all. It's a very quick ride down and back. Might be more fun to build it into your day somehow, like plan to walk around... More
The rain was changing to snow when we hopped on board this historic ride, but we're glad we did. While our view 300 feet up at the top was somewhat limited by the weather, we really enjoyed talking to the elevator operator. We consider it money & time well spent
Absolutely incredible view, if you can't appreciate the uniqueness of this preserved piece of history you need to stop and find some joy in your life. This type of problem solving is what made this country great. Love learning about things like this.
