This is a must for PFA (PEOPLE FROM AWAY) and LOCALES! Talk about BEAUTY and a GREAT HIKE and exercise...and just down the road towards West Quoddy are a couple more GREAT hiking areas, and WOW!! BOOT COVE (THe GREATEST!!) and HAMILTON is the shortest!
We drove from PA to Maine to see the puffins on Machias Island and were not disappointed. There were thousands of them and to see them up close and hear their calls was like a National Geographic experience. Our captain was experienced and knowledgeable providing additional information along the way.
If you haven't hiked before, this may be somewhat daunting. We are experienced hikers and this is one of our favorites in Downeast, Maine. The views are spectacular. Last summer my friends and I walked the Bold Coast trail which is in Cutler, not Machias. It is a rough hike, lots of uneven ground - about three miles out to the coast through the woods. But it was worth it. The waves crashing on the cliffs were awesome. THe view from here is one of God's most beautiful.
