I won't spoil the tour, but if you have any interest in nautical history, carpentry, or entrepreneurialism, this is well worth the $7 and 30-40 minutes for the tour. The view from the top is spectacular as well.

Fun visit, knowledgeable curators and an interesting historical landmark. Worth a trip if you are on Munjoy Hill.

This is an atypical "attraction" but is really a cool piece of history - from its purpose to its construction. And the view from the top is the best in town and then some.

The Portland Observatory offers a great history lesson of how Portland grew. It also offers excerise as there are many steps to the top. Once the steps are climbed, the 360 degree view is much worth the climb. All of Portland and surrounding areas are visible, as well as the ocean and harbour.

The views are fantastic and so is the history. This is the vantage point from which commercial shippers used to watch for incoming sailing ships, to line up dock workers to unload them. Each ship was identified by flags flying from its topmost mast.

The docents are very knowledgeable about this piece of Portland history. The admission is well worth it. There are a fair number of stairs to get to the top, however there is a short talk on each floor to explain the building's structure and use. The view from the top allowed people of the time to see ships coming into... More
