Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This place was an absolute treasure. The chocolate was phenomenal, totally underrated, and very reasonably priced. We had no idea, so we waited in line for a while, and once we got in we just put together one box and left. Once we got back to our hotel and started trying the chocolate, we lamented that we didn't buy 3 more boxes! I am sure this place will be missed - we would have loved to have gone back.

Sadly, after something like 27 years, this wonderful business which combines EXCELLENT chocolates at reasonable prices with hiring people with various handicaps in all parts of the business. They will be missed on the island for many reasons. The long lines and inadequate parking made high season shopping there rather trying, but it has always been worth it, and we will sorely miss them. This last season they will be open Oct 27 until mid-December, and that's it. :(

Some of the best chocolate ever is to be had at Chilmark Chocolates, a business with great product and great ethics. One can purchase specially constructed boxes of your picks of various milk and dark chocolates or grab one of the 1/4, 1/2, or 1 pound boxes of assorted dark or milk chocolates already assembled. This business has employed disabled folks for years. Sad for their customers, the owner is retiring. I’m so glad to have been able to experience Chilmark Chocolates.

Simply great chocolates, filled with treats like cranberries, or ginger and different nuts.
Pick out your box size, the line moves quickly as the friendly staff boxes your selections.
It is my understanding they are closing after this year.
Too bad! The are the best of Chilmark.

We haven't been there in a year or two, due to not coming back to MV for a Sept week (our main week is in August and they're closed). Totally bummed they will be closing after this year. Hands down the best chocolate I've ever had. If you're Up Island after Sept 12, you have to stop in.

We have bought their bars for years and had never stopped by the store. Our mistake. I’m sort of glad we hadn’t since we would have eaten far too much over the years. However it would have been a fun additional stop for our visiting guests. I took one bite and immediately wished I had bought more. So so delicious. Literally may have been the best I have had, including throughout Europe and the new crop of shops throughout NYC. Saddest of all they are closing at the end of the year.

Stopped here while on a tour of the island. Rated it as a 5 only because that was a high as I could go. This chocolate is AMAZING!! Very reasonably priced and the story behind the business will touch your heart. Employees were very nice and welcoming. Small shop, but you will not be disappointed. There wasn’t a line, but after having this chocolate, I would wait in line for it if I were to visit again!

Very good chocolate. Short hours make it very difficult to buy: parking limited and line out the door.

Doing well by doing good....loved how a previous Trip Advisor reviewer said this. My heart sang knowing how they empower and hire people in the local community.
Well well. Visiting in the off season does have its advantages. We were able to quickly park, walk right in, eat a free sample and be greeted with smiles. Always on a mission to find great chocolate and this is one you need to find! From what I've read, the lines and parking can snake around the building - so it was with much joy that we visited at the end of September and had a relatively short wait.
Such genuinely nice people and so philanthropic. This country needs more people like Chilmark Chocolates.
To make it even more worthwhile, the chocolate selection was incredible and yes...they tasted fantastic!

...and tasting delicious. This is first class chocolate at $20/lb as it has been for several years. We only like dark chocolate, so that's what we're familiar with. Very rich and complex tastes with interesting combinations. Chilmark Chocolates also hires handicapped people to make the chocolate, one of the few places on the island where they can get a good job. The store is only open Thurs-Sun, closes for 2-3 weeks around labor day in the off-season except around holicays, and doesn't mail its chocolates or sell them anywhere else. In high season the lines can be very long and parking is difficult, but it's definitely worth it in our family's opinion.

Is it possible to have Chilmark Chocolates shipped as a gift? I have cousins in Austin Texas who have recently done some very nice things for me. And earlier this summer they had visited Martha's Vineyard, but did not happen to discover Chilmark Chocolate. I thought it would be wonderful to send them a gift box from Chilmark Chocolate to kindle nostalgia of a trip they had enjoyed, and to thank them for their kindness to me.
Hopefully, Dennis Jones,

Early on, Chilmark Chocolates did ship, and early on, they also distributed to down-island retail outlets. The two co-owners were so successful, and their business expanded so quickly, that it was overwhelming. But their primary raison d'etre is to provide employment for local people with special needs by creating an excellent product in a "cottage industry" -- not to create a corporation and make big money -- so they deliberately scaled back. Even now, some consumers are unhappy when they encounter a "closed" sign in August, but there is a method to the owners' madness. It's called integrity.
