our stay at the root institute was hot. we booked a fan room over the phone before we arrived and by the end of the first night we were ready to move to an ac room. we asked about ac and they quickly moved us into that room. the food was very good and the people that run the center... More

The rest of Bodh Gaya has very little to offer in terms of safe and clean accommodation (or restuarants) so its definitely the best in town. The rooms are very plain and clean and its very quiet. Bodh Gaya is not safe after dark and they want everyone to be back in their rooms by nightfall. The route between Root... More

We, (my wife and two female relatives) stayed three days in November 2011 at Bodhgaya. Our flight got delayed by seven hours due to fog and landed late at Gaya airport. However the voluntary staff at the Root was informed and they kept everything ready for us. Volunteers from America, Europe, Tibetans and others attend joyfully and voluntarily to keep... More

My girlfriend and I stayed here for two nights during our trip to Bodh Gaya and are very happy to have been out of town a bit as this place is a 15 minute walk from all the action. Once you know the location it's easy, but it's really tough to find without a taxi or auto rickshaw taking you... More

I spent one night at the Root Institute. My visit to Bodhgaya was brief and I wish I could have stayed longer. The accommodations are basic, but very clean. My room was cottage-like with an outside entrance. The bath/shower rooms were nearby. Nice gardens and ambiance. A perfect escape to tranquility. Stayed 3 nights at Root Institute. Can't recommend this highly enough. Staff and volunteers were incredibly attentive, professional and welcoming. It is not far from the main town centre, you simple walk down the dirt road and a bike rickshaw comes shortly to take you in. After reviewing the other accommodation in Bodhgaya this is by far the best.

Bodhgaya is a wonderful place both for buddhists and non-buddhists. However, the accommodation and restaurant scene seems to be rather depressing. Luckily, through a private recommendation, I booked a room at the Root Institute. What a heaven! You can stay at the Root Institute either as a participant at their really high-quality buddhist courses (I have participated at a course... More

Took a week-long intro to Buddhism course here. Found the rooms very basic, but comfortable. Some of the best food we've had during our whole time in India. Courses professionally run and worthwhile. A bit out of town, but cheap/quick cycle rickshaw ride into town.

I stayed at the Root Institute for 2 days as a sort of paying guest. This review does not concern their meditation courses, but rather is geared towards those who are looking for a peaceful, somewhat different place to stay in Bodhgaya. Overall, I recommend the Root Institute. It's a short, maybe 10 minute, walk from the Mahabodhi Temple. It's... More
