An important and distinguished religious place where you should be there to learn more about Buddhist philosophy and instill within you the Dhamapada. There are many temples now being built. Some are ready and some are being built and under completion. As the place is in the terai region one should opt for visit during the cooler season and avoid the hot... The Maya Devi was stunning. Read all you can about the Buddha's history and origins beforehand and you will be far happier and more satisfied with your experience. Note that there is no photography inside the Maya Devi. You may walk or take a tuk-tuk (cost a couple dollars) to the Sacred Garden temples. The walk was beautiful and very... More

I visited this World Heritage site twice, once in January and once in June of 2011. I loved the serenity of the place and its history. At the second visit I noticed that a lot of "upgrades" were in progress such as improved footpaths etc. Well worth the (small) entrance fee.

be sure and visit the monasteries built by other countries to the side of the World Heritage birthplace of Buddha site. China, Vietnam and especially Germany have magnificent temples to visit - at NO COST!!

If you are destined to tour Lumbini for a while, make it a one day trip on an ever-land of purity and basic. Within the very birthplace of Siddhartha who left His throne for the Great Awakening, all hastiness, vibrancy and desires of worldly life seem to fade away without consciousness. Instead, you will soon awake to the reality that... More

At Lumbini, a number of significantly large Buddhist temples have been built in recent years. Some of them are beautiful (the Thai and German ones in particular). All of them seem sterile, with no one around but Nepali caretakers. Only at the Maya Devi temple, the humblest and physically least impressive, is there any actual life. There we found pilgrims... While I appreciate the significance of the site, I found it a little bewildering. The actual site of the Buddha's birth is undoubtedly important for believers, and the surrounds are peaceful and calm with prayer flags, trees and monks, but the rest of the (large in area...hire a bike) site is strangely distancing. Each country seems to be trying to... More

Being a Buddhist, visiting this place is part of our pilgrimage trip to all the holy places of The Buddha. Unless you have sufficient knowledge of this historically and culturally rich place, it is best to engage a tour guide who can explain all these to you. If not, like most passing by tourists, this is just another place in... More
