I had learned from one of the other reviews that the mine tour was limited to only 14 people and that reservations were required. I e-mailed the Museum and asked about reserving a place on the mine tour. Cathy was kind enough to let me know which tours were available on my travel dates. When I arrived for the tour,... More

it was a fun place to explore ..lots of old buildings and mining equipment..most buildings were closed off ,didn't like the glass in all the buildings hard to get photos through...lots of glare..the church was open and we went inside of it . It was a nice little museum.

I had wanted an excuse to visit Butte while staying with family in Montana, and other than the farmer's market I thought the mining museum would be a good choice (especially since I'm a geologist). I was actually really disappointed with this place. The price was a little high to start with. The first exhibit is just a doll collection... More

First, let me point out that at least one of the five-star reviews on here appears to be written by an employee. This "museum" was simply awful. You walk in to a decent gift shop & buy your ticket. You are given a brochure (it wasn't even a real brochure...it was a photocopy & half the words were cut off... More

Having seen a stamping mill in action @ Body, CA and toured the copper mine in Bisbee, AZ we were hugely disappointed in this attraction. Lots of huge equipment with virtually no explanations. If you don't know much about mining already, there's no point in visiting this because you won't learn anything. The imitation-old town is okay, but not very... More

For $7, you get to walk through an un-airconditioned building with a nearly empty gift shop, see a poor mineral display (the nearby Mineral Museum in the University is FREE and VERY nice), a collection of dolls from 70s TV shows, and then walk around the "mining camp". The mining camp is a scaled down, Disney-style imitation of old buildings,... More

We visited Butte on a day trip while staying in Bozeman. We had researched the Mining Museum's website and found the current hours for the Underground Tour posted there, along with a description on physical demands, recommended clothing, etc. When we got to the museum at 12:00 in time for the 12:30 tour, we were told that this tour was... We decided to pay a few extra dollars to take the underground mine tour and it was very much worth the price. The guy who led the tour was the son of a career miner and had recently graduated from Montana Tech with a mining degree. He was friendly and answered all of our many questions. The stats on the... This is an excellent all-volunteer musuem complex; be sure to allow several hours to walk through the extensive exhibits. You enter the complex through the gift shop which has a good selection of books on geology and Montana history. At the gift shop you will receive a newspaper that includes a map of the complex and information on the various... More
