We arrived at Spence Hot Spring early on a Sunday morning, as the paved parking lot the previous Saturday afternoon was absolutely packed. By 9:00, a few other people arrived. Everyone respected the "no nudity" request on the Forest Service sign. Might have been because we were all older-ish and didn't really feel the need to make statements by going... More

I went here the other day and it was really a great day. It was a Monday and I arrived about 11 AM. There was one group of 5 people there when I arrived. It's still "clothing-optional despite the "No Nudity" sign in the parking lot. I was the only one there who was naked but no one minded. The... More

Spence may have been nice if I hadn't discovered another, absolutely pristine, hot springs just a few miles away (walking in the snow was painful but totally worth it). Rowdy individuals and beer cans can ruin what could be a lovely place, and is always a reminder to enjoy beauty and leave with your trash. Overall, this place is a... More

On a late Sunday morning, the place wasn't as packed as I thought it might be given its popularity. The trail is well-maintained and it's a short distance to the pools. Beautiful views from the pools and the little cave has the hottest water, if that's what you're looking for. It had been years since I had visited so I... More

About an hour before dark the local hippies come out of the woodwork for a naked soak and smoke. Brought back memories from my flower powered Volkswagan split window days.

This is a great spring if you can hit it early or late, when there aren't as many ppl. There is plenty of room and the water is generally 98-102ish. In the top pool there is a cave you can crawl into which is really cool, but really hot!

It was a day retreat to sit in the hot springs and just take in the fall colors around nothing like being out doors in the fall and relaxing.

It is incredibly beautiful in this area. The hike is brief but pretty, the springs are hot and plentiful, and you can look out over the mountains while you soak. Especially pretty (though slightly treacherous to get there) in the snow! The drive is enjoyable as well - stop and check out the Soda Dam on your way up. The... More

it's a short hike to the hot springs in beautiful mountain setting -- 3 pools of varying temperatures -- there's a small cave big enough for one person (if you can fit) that has the hottest water, and it's SO relaxing -- and it's free! -- so much better than paying $20 for one hour in Giggling Springs' tepid bathtub... The hot springs is a short hike right off of State Hwy. 4 a few miles north of Jemez Springs. Its worth going to for a hot springs experience in an all natural setting. You may be by yourself if you are lucky, or with a bunch of people.
