During July, August & September we can take you on a guided walk to see one of nature's most spectacular events - a turtle coming ashore to lay her eggs. Then from August to December there are baby turtles being born before your eyes in the hatchery. Adopting a baby turtle or a whole nest is a unique and genuinely Capeverdean souvenir! You will receive a certificate and photos of your baby or babies after they are born. A great gift for friends and family back home.Turtle SOS is a Capeverdean non-profit association and all donations are used to protect turtles in Cape Verde.Hatchery visits are free but times do vary so please check with your hotel when you arrive. « less

Although Sal is not considered a place to go birdwatching, you might like to add these to your lifelist of birds. We spotted 20 species in just two days which is a lot for the island. cream-coloured courser is a popular species as was the bar tailed lark. We also saw a brown booby and plenty of intermediate egrets. A... More

Located outside the Riu Funana and offers a unique insight into the battle to preserve the loggerhead turtle in Cape Verde. All the volunteers are tireless, informative and enthusiastic. One of the days I visited included the excavation of a nest and it was so nice to be able to be literally inches away from an animal you have just... More

Sorry if you thought I was a bit abrupt. These days I have so few opportunities to get to the hatchery and when I am there it's hard to spend time with everyone and make sure the team are working well at the same time. Believe me, we all, including me, love to meet the wonderful people who come and... More

We went to Sal and knew about the conservation that is being undertaken to save the turtles. Before going I emailed Jackie and she provided a quick response with items that they needed. We went on a trip with the rangers to patrol the beach and Janice was extremely knowledgable and gave us a fantastic insight into what the volunteers... More

Thanks so much for your review, it was a pleasure to meet you both. Janice also said how nice it was to patrol with you both. And your donation was really generous. Hope we see you again some time. More

We were staying 5 miles up the beach from a nesting site in Sal next to the Riu. We walked up the beach 6 times during our trip to visit the nests and see if they were hatching or being excavated. After many disappointing visits, we finally got to see some turtle action on our last day, which was lovely.... More

I am really happy that you finally got to see some babies. A shame about all the walking, but one thing is for sure, the turtles like to keep everyone guessing! We email the hotels each morning if there are going to be turtles in the hatchery but we have to rely on them actually telling guests.... Look forward to... More

I went to Sal last July and I stayed at Riu Garopa. There I knew Turtle SOS and their important way to save both turtles and the whole ecosystem of Sal Island. I adopted a nest at the hatchery and talked to the rangers who patrolled it every day. They are all very friendly and very good at explaining people... More
