As another traveler noted, it is better to take it up than down. We didn't read that review, and took the donkey down for 5 euro a piece. The handler waited until there were six of us, tied donkeys to each other, and lead us down the steps. There were four women and two men, and my husband was the... More

This was real fun. You don't need to be a horse rider- the donkeys know their way. Funny and different and well worth the €5. It would have taken us ages to walk all the way up to Fira in the midday heat!

Give this one a go and you won't be disappointed. The mules we went on were well cared for and I managed to avoid being saddle sore. Beats walking any day and we felt that it added to the whole experience.

The donkey ride is a must at least once...... if you are scared of hieght maybe you should go up on the donkey..... use the tram to go down. You are NOT in control of the donkey, you just hang on and the donkey knows where to go. there are MANY of them going up and down the steep trail.... More

the walk down to the harbor takes about a half-hour. take the funicular for four euro's. poor donkeys ply the route, and, needless to say, well........ if you want a burro for other siteseeing, that is different

Not sure if any of you are aware but the donkeys and mules are mistreated - best to take the cable car if you can't walk yourself!

We went to Santorini as part of a cruise last month. We had read awful stories (and some positive ones) of Donkey Rides to the top of Fira, and I had decided not to ride a donkey beforehand. My husband decided to go and thought I was being childish, but at the end of the trip he had completely changed... More

I chose to leave the town by donkey along the walkway leading to the seaport. It was stinky, noisy and chaotic. The guides kept yelling to each other and to their beasts in Greek. There were way too many donkeys, and they were suspiciously quiet, as though they'd given up any enjoyment of life. My elderly guide either did not... More

We took the donkeys up from the Cruise ship docks, and it was a blast. They have photos waiting for you at the top (and don't forget they'll have them on the ship also). I recommend having at least one hand free to brace yourself from the walls if you're not wearing jeans or pants because my wife scraped her... More

So, I took the European Explorer Contiki tour which happens to have a Greek Island hopping option...when your spending $5000 whats another $600? So one of the Greek Islands we hopped to was Santorini! Other than being so distracted by the intense beauty, picture perfect scenes, and having a post card view in every direction we also enjoyed the best... More
