Good overview of the ancient site. Go here before heading out to the site. The site opened again April 2012, and it doesn't have signs or descriptions yet.

4.000 years ago, Santorini had a big civilization, in Akrotiri. People had boats to travel in all mediteraneo... After the explosion , everything covered by lava... but now, we have in this museum everything they found there.. even affrescos.. PLEASE visit this museum !!!

It is surely a great museum and if the people who work at it would care a bit it could be the best. But it is not a sign of interest in their work, that burned lamps at important vitrines are still - after one year - out of order!

I really enjoyed the exhibits in this museum. I visited the archeological site of Akrotiri the day before, and this completed the experience. Many of the artifacts recovered from the site are now housed here. The museum was free on Friday when we attended, so check ahead and see if they still offer a day with free admission. Budget about... More

The Minoan civilization, centered on Crete, extended to Santorini/Thira. From the ruins of the ancient city of Akrotiri(which are worth visiting while on Santorini if you have any interest in archaeology) an incredible array of spectacular Minoan art has been recovered. Most is on display at this museum, which is very compact, well presented, and not at all overwhelming. The... More

This museum has a lot of the items recovered from Akoteri, and the displays are excellent. The original excavation site has been stripped with much of it going to this museum or to Athens.

The museum has very good descriptions of the finds in English. We visited after going to the site and as Ancient Thira has no guides, it made the experience far more enjoyable.
