We visited here over Labor day weekend. You stop outside the gift shop and pay for members in your group. You then proceed to the mining area which is quite scenic and search for garnets. You pay $1 per pound for the gems you find and take home. There is a discount coupon for adults available on their website.
This is an *open* mine tour -- not underground. See website for more info. All the kids on the tour seemed to LOVE it, and so did most adults! Not for those with limited mobility as had to walk down/up somewhat steep graveled hill. Scenery in mine is pretty breathtaking though! Would love to go back!
