The small kids can fly kites, and the more adventurous can hang glide. We had a lots of fun as the light rain shower made it easy for us to walk through the cool sand on a sunny day. An amazing feeling. I also liek the view of the water from above one of the big sand dunes. For more... more

If you are in the area, you have to stop at Jockeys Ridge State Park. Go early in the morning before it gets too hot because the sand will be hard to walk on and you will get burnt when you are climbing on the dunes. Me (25 yr old male), older brother and parents (27-58) all enjoyed this trek.... more

Climbed the dunes at Jockey's Ridge our last full day in OBX. Weather was cooler and wind was great for kite flying. We had a great time and would recommend it to other families. Get there in the early morning before it gets too hot, take water to drink, and take plenty of pictures. We also checked out the sound... more

My husband & I spent 2 hrs. climbing around on the dunes. We were there in late June so the sand wasn't terribly hot. We were barefoot most of the time. There is a hang gliding school there where you can take lessons. Gift shop & picnic tables available too. more

We chose to take the beginner hang gliding lessons through Kitty Hawk Kites at Jockey's Ridge State Park last week. It was a warm, sunny and very windy day. Adults and kids took the brief classroom portion that is required and then set off through the dunes(a.k.a. the Sahara) and up to the top of the dunes for about three... more

This was really worth the visit. We walked all on top of the sand dunes, and it was worth the short hike. Take your sunglasses, a hat, and a walking stick and you'll enjoy the walk so much more. Great place to fly kites in the OBX. And it's FREE. more

I read the reviews about Jockey's Ridge State Park and decided to go with my wife. This may be a good place to go with kids as they can run around to their heart's content. For a couple, I think it is definitely overrated. Particularly, make sure you put on suntan lotion on a summer day as you will likely... more

It will give you a workout climbing to the top but it is truly a sight to be seen and the sunset is gorgeous from on top. Fun for the family or for a quiet romantic evening with your significant other. Even if you do not like the sand you can drive by and take a look at these huge... more

My family of 4 live in VA but we go to the obx a few times a year. We have always stopped at Jockey'sRidge. Every trip, it is amazing to climb and see both the ocean and the sound. It is a little work out but even my 8 and 3 year old make it on their own, just a... more

Don't miss going to Jockey's Ridge, it's a site to be seen. Choose an overcast cool day if you have one to go, otherwise you will be sweating and tired out before you reach the dunes. Also be sure and leave 30 min. to run into the information building and view the displays there, even little ones will enjoy the... more
