If you are in the area, you have to stop at Jockeys Ridge State Park. Go early in the morning before it gets too hot because the sand will be hard to walk on and you will get burnt when you are climbing on the dunes. My husband & I spent 2 hrs. climbing around on the dunes. We were there in late June so the sand wasn't terribly hot. We were barefoot most of the time. There is a hang gliding school there where you can take lessons. Gift shop & picnic tables available too. more

This was really worth the visit. We walked all on top of the sand dunes, and it was worth the short hike. Take your sunglasses, a hat, and a walking stick and you'll enjoy the walk so much more. Great place to fly kites in the OBX. And it's FREE. more
