This year in the shoulder season, the fortress did not have paid actors on site to help interpret the experience, however our group really enjoyed wandering around and reading the displays. We had young kids with us (4 and 9 mos) and the 4 year old loved hanging out with the sheep and goats that were loose on the grounds.... More

Experience life in this pre-War of 1812 French fort and settlement in Nova Scotia. Smell the roast pork, turning slowly on the spit jack in the Engineer's House; and see real kitchen gardens. Walk through the fort, and imagine your life there, as a conscript in the French Army. The extensive village offers a wide range of period architecture and... More

My husband and I cruised on the Maasdam to Canada in early May. One of the reasons we selected this cruise was to get to visit places that we had missed on a previous trip to the Maritimes. A visit to Louisbourg Fortress was high on our list. After reading many reviews on TripAdvisor which recommended a full day at... More

Wow, just wow. This spot is mind-blowing! You truly are taken through a time machine into the past of the fortress. Prepare to be completely immersed in the culture and history of the site. The employees are always in full character and are enthusiastic about educating both adults and children alike. Make sure you allot plenty of time for this,... More

Very interesting place to visit. You see how people lived in the "old days" The bread is very good if you get a chance to try some. Make sure you bring a jacket no matter how warm the weather is in the area you can be sure that it will be cold and damp at the Fortress.

This is one of the biggest, most impressive historical sites in North America. Of course, it is a reconstruction, but rebuilt (as a make-work project) on the foundations of the original fortress. Even though we were there on a windy, rainy day, after the big crowds of the summer had disappeared, the place was very well staffed, and we were... More

My mom and I went to Cape Breton for a dog show, so obviosly we had our tiny canine with us. They don't allow dogs, also I think it may have been closed when we drove by; It was a pretty foggy day and couldn't really see much. Seemed like a bit of a hike to get there from the... More

When we arranged our trip to Cape Breton, we added in the Fortress of Louibourg as an afterthought, not expecting a whole lot from it. Boy were we wrong! We spent hours here and would have stayed even longer if we didn't have to drive back to Halifax the same day. From now on we will always make sure that... More
