I actually visited in Aug 2010, and it wasn't my first visit. This fort was used as a trading post after the Lewis and Clark expedition came through the area. Inside the main house there is a museum that explains the history of the fur trade in the area. At the main entrance to the fort, there is an old... More

I had expected a typical western plains fort, but this trading post suppported by John Jacob Astor for his fur trade is out of this world – I thought the post at Fort Niagara in New York was pretty elegant, but this has it beat hands down. Although it had (and has) a stockade with two blockhouses, it was a... More

Fort Union Trading Post NHS site near Williston, North Dakota is worth stopping by and having a look around. It is free to get in. It was the most important fur trading post on the upper Missouri in the 1800’s. There were rangers there to answer questions and also volunteers that are dressed up in period costumes and will tell... More

I visited the fort during a living history night. They had several "acts" where the tours would approach groups of people dressed in authentic period clothing that would recreate different scenes that would be typical of the fort. There is also a great gift shop there. It doesn't have too much junk stuff. It's all good books and some of... More

This doesn't seem to be a too well known national historic site. It is in the middle of no mans land at the North Dakota/Montana border. It's a beautiful reconstructed historic place to visit. The oldest surviving fur trading post in the country. It was not a goverment or military post but an actual trading post. It was used from 1828... More
