Spending a night in such an eerie place was a bit daunting. The atmosphere was very weird and as we entered our apartment we felt watched. The apartment was lovely (3 bedrooms) and decorated in old fashioned style which added to the atmosphere. Well we survived the night but not without incident! Probably the most scared Ive ever been. However,... More

Most heritage conservators would have a fit at Chillingham - and that is why it is a great place to visit. If you want national trust standard order and explanation, Chillingham is not for you. And it makes no concessions to people with impaired mobility (mainly because it has not been "improved"), so for some that can be a problem.... More

We had an interesting afternoon at this Castle. It's very cold inside so take extra clothes. We couldn't take the children into the dungeons and torture chambers......our choice....but the adults loved it!! Cafe very good too.

Visiting this Castle gives you a very weird feeling, but my goodness as you go from room to room you find it so interesting. It's filled to the brim with odd and eccentric things The tearoom was delightful with a roaring fire which was very welcome as the day we visited snow was quite heavy on the ground. A very interesting day... More

This was our second visit here (2 adults, 2 children) and this time it was certainly a bit more organised, but had lost none of its charm. Not for anyone with problems on stairs though as there are no lifts etc. You can visit castles all over this region, but this IS different. Most are very hands off and a... More

Arrived late, weren't planning to visit, recommended to go & see by a butcher and they ended up locking the place behind us as we were walking through - the kids however loved it & having already done 4 other Northumberland castles this was their favourite. It was cold, dark & dirty. Cheap to enter & not contrived in any... More

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Chillingham, complete with door that opened and shut on its own! You are left to poke about wherever you want, pick things up, put them down. The tea shop was wonderful with a roaring fire. The gardens were immaculate, with interesting statuary. The Norman church nearby is well worth a visit too. Didn't see... More

This castle is not your every day visitors attraction, however we loved it. If you have trouble with steps this castle is no good for you,but for us it was great, going up and down all the little twisty steps and hall ways finding rooms full of dusty old knick knacks was lovely. The torture chamber was haunting it is full... More

+ve you will NOT have seen anything like this before, the collections are very diverse and varied. -ve very little information in the rooms, few staff to offer insights into collections. -ve eating facilities not great. Overall a good couple of hours slot in if you have some spare time to fill.
