This stop was not in my plans on the day that I was to visit the nearby Kirtland Temple. So when I had some time to kill after my tour of the Temple, I decided to check out the Garfield home, which I discovered quite by accident. It turned out to be a highlight of my vacation. I must admit... More

We drove up to Mentor, Ohio from Columbus because we had just read the book "Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President" by Candice Millard. It chronicles Garfield's path to the presidency, his assassination, and how medical ignorance sent him to an early grave. We were not disappointed. The house is a... More

The James A. Garfield house is a great trip back in time to the late 19th century. The home is recently restored Victorian mansion. The first presidential library, it is a great place for home restorers and civil war buffs. Check out the front door. It is a reproduction created by Amish craftmen from Middlefield OH.

I have been there twice. Very good value for your money and the guides are quite knowledgable. The grounds are well kept and clean. It is amazing that this President would before elected give speeches from the porch. U.S. Grant visited there as did others. In order to find out if the two men Garfield & Grant liked each other... For four Friday afternoons during the summer, the Garfield site hosts a unique produce market with art and craft vendors, live music and plenty of things for the kids to do. And it's free. A great place to stop, shop, have an inexpensive dinner, and then get in a tour of the Garfield Home.

We live in the Cleveland area and one nice Saturday in July we decided to visit the Garfield National Historic Site looking for something fun but educational to do with the kids. We were wonderfully surprised with the preservation of the home and all the artifacts inside. The staff was great helping the kids with their Junior Ranger Badge and... More

I have always wondered what type of President James Garfield would have been had he not been assassinated so early in his term. Here one learns how learned and educated President Garfield was and one can not help but think he would have made a lasting, positive impact on history. The Garfield home is interesting to tour. Period furniture fills... More
