The present Oregon State Capitol, dating from the 1930s, is the result of a fire that destroyed the old one, which was in design typical of most state capitols. We always visit in December when the local school musicians are performing. In the summer, be sure to take the tour that goes up to the top.

A visit to the state capitol is as it should be...citizen access to the elected representatives without physical or "police state" security barriers. The history and beauty of this building is realy nice. A visit to it is definately worth the time. Take a guided tour and even sit in on a Senate meeting if your lucky. Gardens all around are very nice as well.

I like the cherry trees blooming in spring, the gold statue on the top of the dome, and the cleanliness of the sidewalks. Salem is a very clean town.
