The present Oregon State Capitol, dating from the 1930s, is the result of a fire that destroyed the old one, which was in design typical of most state capitols. The "new" one is anything but, which makes it particularly interesting to visit. It is a great example of art moderne in architecture, like the Asian Museum in Seattle. From the... More

Great architecture. I only looked at the Capitol from the Willamette Campus. This will sound strange, but kudos to the Sewer Crew and the Vactor Truck. These are the unsung heroes of all municipalities. I am sure they were out there taking care of an odor issue. These folks respond to problems all times of the day. Thanks for preventing... More

We always visit in December when the local school musicians are performing. In the summer, be sure to take the tour that goes up to the top.

A visit to the state capitol is as it should be...citizen access to the elected representatives without physical or "police state" security barriers. A visitor's desk is omnipresent and staff are very helpful. Legislator's offices are just a couple of floors up. I met my legislator and was lucky enough to meet the governor. Plentiful metered parking is nearby. One... More

The history and beauty of this building is realy nice. A visit to it is definately worth the time. Take a guided tour and even sit in on a Senate meeting if your lucky. Gardens all around are very nice as well.

I like the cherry trees blooming in spring, the gold statue on the top of the dome, and the cleanliness of the sidewalks. Salem is a very clean town.

I'm a geology teacher and I take my students here every year to look at the building stones. The exterior of the capitol building is Vermont marble, and various statues and monument on the grounds have granite plinths.Inside, the rotunda floor is gray fossil-bearing limestone and/or marble of Paleozoic age. Black stone is Cretaceous age fossil-bearing limestone. Walls are Cretaceous... More
