We always visit in December when the local school musicians are performing. In the summer, be sure to take the tour that goes up to the top.
A visit to the state capitol is as it should be...citizen access to the elected representatives without physical or "police state" security barriers. A visitor's desk is omnipresent and staff are very helpful. Legislator's offices are just a couple of floors up. I met my legislator and was lucky enough to meet the governor. The history and beauty of this building is realy nice. A visit to it is definately worth the time. Take a guided tour and even sit in on a Senate meeting if your lucky. Gardens all around are very nice as well.
I like the cherry trees blooming in spring, the gold statue on the top of the dome, and the cleanliness of the sidewalks. Salem is a very clean town.
