very friendly, spread out in a confusing manner. Some of the displays especially of Stonehenge are fascinating
Strongly recommended, takes longer than you would expect from outside. Very absorbing exhibits from the early Avebury/Stonehenge artifacts to modern day. Often have very interesting lunchtime talks, watch the website for calendar. Staff are happy to help, and they now operate an Information Point with information on other local attractions and accommodation, since the closure of the TIC in the...

This is a little way out of town but worth the trip. By 'little way' I mean a 10 min walk. The museum covers all periods from prehistory to modern times and has a room devoted to each period, for example Saxon or Roman.
There is a remarkable reference library consisting of many rare and scholarly books.
Be not deceived...

It occupies two beautiful listed buildings, and is such,...

this museum tucked away from view and not easy to find has really good displays of all periods- especially prehistory and an excellent shop - the library is remarkable too
A must see for those with an interest in Archaeology! You only get a true sense of Stonehenge and Avebury once you have visited this museum.
Well worth skidding off the beaten track to go and see. I'm planning on going back with my daughter. Helpful, knowledgeable staff.
A designated museum of national significance, this museum is a must-see for anyone curious about the society which created Stonehenge, and much else besides - such as Romans, a really good viking gallery, and plans for new, shinier exhibitions in the future apparently. A perfect accompaniment to Stonehenge basically.
