About
The Civic, Barnsley is a multi-storey, multi-purpose arts centre seeking to bring wide-ranging, contemporary artforms to appreciative audiences from Barnsley and beyond. As a proud supporter of the arts in South Yorkshire, The Civic showcases high-quality performances and exhibitions not usually associated with a centre of its size or regional location, and is instrumental in bringing world-class touring theatre, music and arts groups en route to larger UK cultural centres and other venues around the globe. Comprising a large auditorium, the Assembly Room - accommodating the best in UK theatre, dance, comedy, music, cabaret, independent and classic regional film screenings and family productions - in addition to a large art gallery (Gallery), which hosts a wide variety of innovative and exciting exhibitions dealing with all aspects of art, design and craft, The Gallery programme consists of curated shows and touring exhibitions which work in conjunction with the V&A, Crafts Council, Tate and Design Museum London, as well as with curators here in Barnsley. The building also has a large Panorama display and event space, working offices and several work hubs, as well as boasting a blend of historic and modern architecture enhanced by the adjacent Mandela Gardens. This public space was redeveloped in 2009 for the first time since the 1980s, and also includes facilities for outdoor performances. Gallery: Tuesday - Saturday, 10am-5pm (last admission is 15 minutes prior to closing time) Box Office: Monday - Friday, 10am-5pm / Saturday, 10am-4pm Sunday, 10am-4pm (on family performance days)

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Many years since we last visited the Civic and were pleasantly surprised at the presentation of the new and improved Civic. The same building in the town centre, but had massive upgrades inside which reflect the immense facelifting going on throughout the town itself. A very enjoyable evening watching Jon Courtenay (winner of Britain's Got Talent 2020) which was complemented by the pleasant surroundings.

Comedy night, ‘Last Laugh’, the Compare Toby a notable exception to three dreary middle aged male comics, dreary intros - “are there any couples in the audience?” - leading to dreary gags. In Barnsley no one can hear you yawn, except if you did, even behind a mask, the youthful manageress - prison keys on hipster pants - might bark a Covid related invention to desist. I’ve never encountered such an unhappy group Staff who, under her glare seemed nervous not to transgress the military dictatorship at play. It made for a rather uncomfortable atmosphere, one I truly hope relaxes soon. Sooner the better.

KUBZ tipi bar held an event here over bank holiday weekend and the only thing nice about this place was the fire pit. Got a porn star martini which tasted purely of passion fruit purée. Absolutely disgusting tbh. I didn’t even drink it. I asked the waitress if the cocktails were pre-made etc and she said they made them there so I asked if the daiquiri was blended and she said yes. So I ordered that. It was definitely not blended and literally tasted of strawberry purée. Disgusting again. So I asked another woman if they had blenders and she said no. Very little choice in vodkas and gins. I don’t like Gordon’s and that’s all they had. I struggled to find a decent drink choice here. The bench I was sat on fell over at one point but the staff were so nice and swapped the bench(might have been my fault it fell but idk) so I couldn’t thank them enough for how they dealt with that!
Toilets were clean and the staff were nice enough. Just let down by the drinks.

Great venue, acoustics amazing, comfy seats
We went to see Soul Jam, they were brilliant, so versatile and really rocked the place.
Review would have been 5* , but you can't hear youself think in bar area, echoing so loud, souded like a 1000 people all talking out loud.

Had the night here to see one of my all-time favorite songwriters and guitarists Glen Tilbrook and he delivered a fantastic show. The venue was brilliant, great seats with the addition of being able to pre-order your drinks for the interval (which I thought was great) and saved a lot of time queuing up.I would not hesitate going to this venue again. Met Glen after the show and he is a top guy and had a chat with Charlie who was Glen's support, she's like a female Tilbrook (such a talent). Loved the show and the venue is great for the smaller intimate shows such as this

Things didn’t get off to a good start when all of the blue badge spaces on Hanson Street directly outside The Civic were occupied by vehicles not displaying blue badges! Not the fault of The Civic I know, but first impressions count. When I tried to access the building I realised that the ‘automatic door’ was no such thing, and is in fact deceptively heavy. I then tripped on badly fitted matting by the door, and found myself and my disability attempting four flights of stairs as the lift was out of order. This is obviously four flights back down again, with the help of a wobbly handrail. There is a service lift you can embarrassingly be accompanied to, if you have the energy and dexterity for a long walk with a very pacey member of staff. The first floor disabled facilities also seem to double up as a play area for children (the ladies facilities are behind a locked door) so the disabled facilities are a bit of a free for all, and there is a large and disconcerting hole in the ceiling. All that aside, the exhibitions are worthwhile, and there is no direct admission fee. Just a shame that the message they are inadvertently giving is that those patrons with a disability, particularly an invisible disability, are not valued or welcome.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this review. We really value your feedback and are very sorry to hear you had a negative experience on this occasion. I’m happy to say that the lift is now fixed, making the building more accessible again, and appreciate that this was frustrating during the time waiting for repair. Improving our accessibility and offering great customer service is a priority to us and I would like to assure you that we are taking all of your comments on board (I have passed these on to the relevant team members), and we are striving to get these remaining issues fixed. If you would like to send us your contact details to enquiries@barnsleycivic.co.uk it would be great to get in touch to get your perspective in the future. Very glad to hear you enjoyed the exhibition and we do hope you will visit us again. Many thanks again, Becki

Travelled for over an hour to see an exhibition only to be told it was closed on Sunday (despite it saying TWICE on the event page it was open).

To add insult to injury I was harassed and threatened by a group of aggressive youths just outside (I say 'youths' but I think it's safe to say they were 20 somethings) for WEARING GLASSES!

I'm never going back to Barnsley.

Just been to the latest exhibition at this excellent venue. Really well curated with some 'of the times' examples bringing back all sorts of memories. Thought provoking and provocative, this exhibition charts all the major developments of this seemingly inconsequential piece of clothing.
Well worth a visit for the whole family and it's FREE!. Well done Barnsley Civic.
