- Juliet T36 contributionsFABULOUS ByronI love Byron Bay. Restaurants are ace abd customer service that I've experienced have been excellent. DI Vino and Bang Bang are both excellent restaurants with highly personalised service. Regards accommodation I stayed at a lovely hidden gem called Casa Piera just behind the city center in a quiet street. The host Emily would make you feel totally at home and the decor of this little side apartment attached to their large gorgeous home is pretty special. There's also a friendly Cafe right next door. - The Walking CriticPerth, Australia644 contributionsBeautiful spotHaving visited the town we decided to do as the Romans do in Rome and headed to the beach. Parking was no easy prospect for such a popular destination, but the car park angels were on our side, as we found a spot to the southern side of the bay. It was really windy, but still fairly protected. People of all ages and walks of life were either walking, or surfing, or playing in the sand. The location is very pretty and despite being a major tourist trap, there were still places to visit in and enjoy, particularly if you ventured off the right side and into the rocks to find other hidden bays.Visited March 2023Travelled with familyWritten 13 July 2023

Certainly it's a tourist mecca these days but it’s also a lively, fun, and stunningly beautiful part of the NSW coastline. The beaches all have rolling waves and long stretches of golden sand. We alternated between Main Beach, Clarkes Beach and Wategos but our favourite was The Pass. The thing that really ‘made’ our trip was staying right on the beach. Byron Bay Beachfront Apartments were directly opposite Main beach so we walked nearly everywhere and hardly moved our car during our stay. Car parking and congestion on the main road are two of the big frustrations for many visitors to Byron so if you can avoid this by booking centrally located accommodation then it will make all the difference. The village centre was also just a couple of minutes walk away. It’s crowded for sure but it also offers lots of shops, boutiques, cafes, street entertainers, bars, and upmarket restaurants. Japonaise Kitchen was our favourite for a casual meal. Byron Bay is mostly all about the beaches but if you need a change of pace, there are a lot of other things to do. One afternoon we decided to do a bit of exploring so we walked the Byron Bay History Walking Trail (see separate review). On the weekend, we went to the very popular Community Markets which are held on Sunday mornings. The best non-beach thing we did was visiting The Farm. Kids loved feeding the sheep, chickens and pigs and we loved relaxing at the cafe-restaurant.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 March 2024

While the beaches can be nice, and the walk to the lighthouse was truly gorgeous, the rest of the Byron experience was vastly underwhelming and gross. The streets of downtown smell like stale beer, dirty taps, urine, and rott. The drivers are exceptionally dangerous, with no regard for pedestrians, making walking around an unappealing option at best.
The people here, both on the beach and on the streets, are filthy. Most folks wear no shoes anywhere, clearly haven't showered or applied deodorant in days, and are rude. They are genuinely disgusting.
The excursions, like snorkeling or horseback riding are the only things that make visiting worth it. Even then, accommodations are overpriced and under-supplied.
There are some nice aspects to Byron, but if you're looking for a nice vacation destination I would highly suggest looking elsewhere for equivalent beauty and much better standards. If you're a backpacker, this might be the spot for you, but a tourist not so much.

This once friendly beach haven is now a tourist mecca with a continuous stream of cars and people.
Many of the places we visited seemed to dislike tourists, making entry to bars and pubs difficult for some members of our group, despite ID.
Everything ridiculously overpriced - from parking, venues, food and drink.
Some beautiful views but comparable to many other friendlier places on the coast.
Byron. Been & done!

We came here for a wedding and whilst walking around the streets looking for a restaurant we were verbally abused on three separate occasions by three separate groups of men for being gay. They are so retro in this town that even the word ‘poofter’ is still used liberally. My partner and me are in our 60’s and were so threatened by this that we returned to the safety of our hotel without dinner. This town is dangerous for gay people - stay away and spend your pink dollars somewhere else.

Totally overall , there are plenty of other NSW coastal touristy towns , with better value for money .. as Byron Bay is overpriced .. specifically with accommodation & it’s high street parking fees everywhere over Byron Bay CBD

Noisy, smelly, crowded, way over priced. This would have to be by far the worst place I have ever been to. Payed to stay 4 nights, stayed 1 night and left to drive the 7 hours home early the next morning.

Byron Bay is one of the most beautiful locations in Australia. The vibe is cafe life, the beaches and the shopping areas are stunning.
A must do is the Byron cape lighthouse walk. We walked down through beautiful coves and stunning flora stopping at a beautiful cafe for refreshments on the way. The trail ends at the main beach which is so beautiful it takes your breath away.

What is the last time that any of the snorkel tours go out? Reason being I fly into Brisbane at 2:00 and won't get there until 5:00 pm. I am not sure when it gets dark during winter season and how late any of the snorkel boats leave at the late afternoon? Can you let me know? Even private companies? Thanks
