On our way out of Newport, we detoured to tour Fort Wetherill and were pleasantly surprised! Some amazing views and great trails here! The fort itself is fascinating and we wish the state would put some money into its refurbishment.

This was once an enormous army base. Its entire ocean front is solid cement that housed TNT bunkers, 16 in. disappearing guns and personnel designed to repel a German invasion. plenty of parking. dive, explore caves, relax. beautiful scenery.
Expected to see a "fort", but only a few WWII buildings which were not open. Seemed to be a good diving spot as the only other people there were several teams of divers. Maybe in the summer there is more, but nothing to see in October.
Easy entry on the right, though the left is much more secluded. In the autumn you can catch some tropical fish who rode the gulf stream up from the carribean.
