We always go to the market when we vacation in Charleston. We almost always find something we want. There is a lot of touristy stuff and that is ok, because there are a lot of tourists. Try to give yourself a different experience by imagining what the market was like in the early 1830's when first built. Try to look... more

There's a LOT of stuff in Charleston that's overhyped (can you say "she-crab soup"?) and this is at the top of the list. This is nothing more than a flea market. Do you have a junk-ridden flea market in your own home town? Have you been? Congratulations. You can save yourself the 10 minutes it would take to walk through... more

As a destination expert for Charleston, and a local who truly loves our city, I was disappointed to see the comments left by ChellePV. Some of the stuff in the Old Market is local Charleston crafts, some is not. There are vendors selling everything from Sweetgrass baskets to T-Shirts to jewelry. I am sorry that ChellePV found a "lot of...

A lot of souvenir type things, but if you really look.. tere are a lot of really great finds. There are a lot of little things hand made and sold by locals. We bought a couple of handmade wooden puzzles, some sun glasses (mine broke!), and some really great photography that we matted and framed when we got home, and... more

This is not what we thought it would be. Filled with tacky tourist stuff and in between a few good items view and to possible purchase. The sweetgrass basket makers provided some unusual and beautiful work but we went through the whole market in record time. A bit disappointing. more

The old market is a fantastic place to stroll and possibly purchase a few items. Prices tend to be above average compared to other shopping options in town, but it is worth a visit just to stroll. more

If you are spending a day in downtown Charleston, this is something that you should do. It is like a upper class flea market. It has some nicer things that you can bring home as souvenirs. Most of it is just in a open air market, but there are also a few small shops in one of the buildings. This... more

Basically an outdoor mall with high prices. Some prices were reasonable but most were not. If you are in the market for a basket - be prepared to shell out big bucks. A TINY basket will set you back over $75. more

This was a wonderful thing to do on our last day in Charleston. We loved the ladies who sold the sweet grass baskets but ladies, don't be afraid to haggle the price. I wasn't paying $75 for a swag or napkin ring holders. I did in fact pay $20 for a very beautiful swag and $20 for a set of... more

We went to the market after a carriage ride. They have lots of nice neat stuff. I wanted to buy a sweetgrass basket, but the ladies there were not nice when we asked about how much a basket costs. There are some shops that are enclosed and at 11 we found a few of them were not open. We even... more

Lots of different items such as sunglasses, paintings, food, gifts, souvenirs, clothing, etc. Some are more expensive then others. Most are unique items. Bought a saroung for $18. Great shops on sides of street also. I go everytime I'm in Charleston and always find something. more
