As part of our recent trip to Tennessee, I was looking forward to visiting James Polk's home after having read a biography of his life. There is a building next to the house which serves as a museum. The video that was shown was a bit old, probably needs updating. We took a tour of the house and unfortunately were... More

I found the Polk House to be a surprising good exhibit for a less frequented destination. The docent was very good and answered all our questions. We enjoyed our visit and found it informative.

This is a very small museum in little town just off of HWY 65 in between Nashville Tennessee and the Alabama state line. It has a lot of very interesting items to see. The house has lots of character.

James K. Polk was an important president, though now largely forgotten. House shows his background and preserves his story.

The house looks modest on the outside, but the interior is quietly grand. It has been several years since I've visited, but I still remember being awed by the house's loveliness. It is fancier than Franklin's Carter House, but not as opulent as Rippavilla. The house is beautifully maintained, and when I visited we were basically allowed to wander about... More

Whenever I travel I look for local historical sights to visit. I was glad to find one here in central Tennessee tucked into this sleepy county seat. Before coming to Columbia, I knew virtually nothing about James Polk beyond "Manifest Destiny" and "54-40 or Fight!" The Polk family house and museum were a delightful find just off the town square.... More

this house has great artifacts from the president during mexican american war. some of the stuff is in pristine condition including their clothing and the oldest photograph ever taken in the white house. you are allowed to take photographs at this attraction which is unusual. the guide was excellent and they had a nice gift shop. a must see for... Having been to other presidential homes (Monticello, Mount Vernon, Hermitage), the most impressive thing about the James K Polk home was the amount of original furniture and items including personal clothing, books and the Presidential china. Though the house itself has had many lives (including being a YMCA at one point), it has been refurbished back to the style consistent... More

James K. Polk is a former President about whom most people know very little, and this house is the only surviving residence, other than the White House. The house and little museum next door provide a very quick glimpse into the life and Presidency of this man whom historians regard as one of our best. While the house is small,... More
