My husband and I planned a visit to Franklin specifically to visit the Carnton Plantation. I have read the book “Widow of the South” by Robert Hicks, a fiction book about Carrie McGavock, owner of the Carnton Plantation. However, after reading the sterling reviews about Carter House on Trip Advisor, I decided to spend more time there. Carter House is... more

If you have an hour and a half to take the full tour I'll recommend it. We didn't have the luxury of time but you can walk around the property for free and take pictures. You'll have to make your own story about the history though since there are no plaques describing the different structures and artifacts. The paid tour... more

For Civil War buffs, this is a must-see. The tour guide (college-educated historian) does an excellent job of telling the story of the battle and setting the scene. The house & grounds are well preserved piece of American history. The museum has many artifacts, pictures, etc. of people involved in the battle. We also visited Carnton Plantation--if you're on a... more

I have just been to the Carter house and for those people who are interested in the American Civil war, it is a must see. The bullet holes are still there 150 years later. With the naration of the guide you can almost see the battle going on. The knowledge of the guides are amazing and any questions you have... more

It was early so we drove around Franklin and happened upon Carter House. It was our first stop. Utterly amazing! The property is well preserved as it would have looked at the time of the... more

If you have never been exposed to Civil War history, this is definitely the place to visit. Our guide was excellent and the information given about what happened at this site was beyond belief. I had my daughter and 8 year old granddaugher with me and both enjoyed this tour. After learning what this war was all about, my daughter... more

The Carter House is full of history. There are bullet holes in the buildings and the museum is small but excellent. In fact, it is one of the most interesting civil war museums that I have viewed. There is a lot of the human story here, not just military facts. The tour guides tell lively stories about the people who... more
