Much as I like its whisky, it's clear that little to no effort or investment has been put into visitor facilities and information - a working distillery with a small shop but not much else.

We visited the Bunnahabhain Distillery because we wanted to visit every single distillery on Islay. For that reason, I do not regret the visit. However, I will not return as the Bunnahabhain Distillery is quite far away on a single-lane road and we found the entire complex looked like like a ghost town. The store was also a bit dreary.... This was the one distillery we visited that didn't make you welcome at all. Unfriendly and not helpful staff, useless signage left you wondering where to park and visit etc. Gray, drab buildings very unlike the bright white washed smartness of most of the other distilleries. Really not worth the effort.

The most remote of Islay's distilleries but worth the trip. In a lovely spot overlooking the bay and onto the Paps of Jura. Very historic building and an interesting tour. Small shop and not many other facilities but you have to go here if only for the views.

This is a real working factory, albeit one that produces an amazing malt whisky. It combines down to earth charm with a warm welcome. It was good to get a welcome from local people. Even without paying for a tour, you are free to sample their whisky in the shop. I'd recommend the newly re-released 12 year old and special... More
