The "castle" is actually a 19th Century mansion that looks somewhat like an old castle. At the time of my visit, it was under renovation and not open to visitors. It is still an impressive sight, though, looming over the town of Stornoway. Hopefully it will be put to good use soon, but until then, I can't recommend visiting.

Was informed by our guest house that there was a nice walk around the castle grounds. This we did. Coffee shop also in the grounds which gives the historic background to the castle. The castle was closed for renovation.

I went for a walk around the castle grounds during my stay in Stornoway! Very beautiful area, I'm sure it would be even nicer on a summers day!!

It's nice to be able to walk around and see some of the history of the area,Stornoway itself has a lot of history and the castle covers this in great detail. There are some lovely nearby walks and the view from the castle over the harbour is great.

Once a private home, it was built in 1847 by Sir James Matheson who owned the Isle of Lewis. It served as a naval base in WWII. Great architecture & surrounded by a beautiful park, perfect for an evening stroll & views of the harbour.

The island was in an economic depression, but he invested and developed it - he built 200 miles of roads and established a steamer link to the mainland, and planted hundreds of trees and... More
