This Gaol is very atmospheric, some of the rooms are decorated to look as they may have back then. It has a washroom, an excercise room, a torture room, a chapel, an office, an infirmary and a few others. It also has a corridor leading to the hanging post where a man was actually hung from, apparently he cursed the... More

This is a fascinating trip which shows how criminals were treated in the past some for very minor offences

Spent a really interesting afternoon in the gaol, which is largely unaltered from Victorian times. The audio tour is really informative and atmospheric with real stories of the prisoners who were held there. There are also information panels all the way round which provide additional information or could be used instead of the audio tour (but I recommend the audio... More

The gaol was very interesting , we used the audio guides to lead us around and tell the stories. Life was very hard back then and some of the stories were a little sad. Very informative and would recommend to friends.

What an interesting place! Built in 1829 you can wander at leisure with an audio phone, exploring the cells, the stone breaking yard, the treadmill and walk the route condemned men took to meet the hangman. The gaol housed both men and women but they were kept segregated. There are many informative panels to read explaining how hard life was... More

We all found it really interesting including our 3 year old daughter. Lots to explore and good explanations on the wall.
