Very informative and interesting afternoon. The guide, Ian, was very knowledgable and was enthusiastic in his performance as a warden. Ian obviously has a great love of the history of this old prison. The tour provides a small insight into the daily lives of those unfortunate enough to find themselves on the wrong side of the law. Young children may...

took my elderly father and teenage son, guide Ian took on role of Prison Warden, which was done with humour and mostly good taste. i do struggle a bit with these 'role-playing' type tours, as you feel you're asking the guide to 'get out of character' if you ask questions not in his 'script'. Said open to 5pm during holidays, arrived at 3.30pm said they were closing very dissapointing.
Tour guide (Ian I think) played the character of a guard and played it well. Treated us like prisoners (in a funny way), had a great sense of humor and really knew his history. Will do night tour next time. hope Ian will still be there.

My wife had often told me of the prison at Beechworth and it's conection to the Kelly family. On our drive back to Qld we took the oppurtunity to visit this now open and complete 19th century prison. We were not disapointed. The entrance fee , some may say is expensive, but to be honest it is no more expensive...

The tour was interesting and covered all we wanted to know, but with 3 primary school aged kids it cost us $75 which was pricey. Also, the gift shop didnt have anything in the way of books relating to the history of the gaol or Ned Kelly, and not much in the way of souveniers for the kids.
We went on the Beechworth Gaol Unlocked tour during the day and it was very interesting and informative. Our guide got into the spirit of things in terms of being in a prison which added an element of fun. Not all of the buildings are opened yet, which is a bit of a shame, as there are other parts of...
