A western spur of The Trace ran through a portion of what is now the park. The park was built as part of President Roosevelt's "New Deal" program. The land was bought from residents who could no longer make a living farming the land because of extensive erosion problems. With the many acres of scenic woodlands, the park includes four lakes, a swimming beach, a 47 room resort inn and restaurant complex, cabins, group lodge, camping areas, picnicking sites, playgrounds, a ball field, a regulation pistol firing range, picturesque hiking trails, a wrangler camp, 250 miles of horse riding trails, a park store, and archery range. Located at I-40, exit 116, this area is composed of a State Park, State Forest and a WMA with a total of 48,000 acres. « less

We eat at the restaurant once or twice a month. The food is very good, the restaurant clean and the wait-staff friendly.

This review is long overdue. Our local writing group has an annual retreat here and this past year was the first time I was able to attend. We had a fabulous time! We stayed in the villas but ate and had our meetings at the Inn. The food was wonderful, the staff so helpful and friendly, and they even have... More

We stayed in one of the rustic cabins at the park. The mattress on the bed was as hard as a rock and there were no blankets provided, just a sheet and comforter. There were only a set of sheets provided for the pull out sofa bed. We found a mouse trap in one of the cupboards & mouse poops... More

We travelled with our fifth wheel at the end of Dec 2010. We started the Trace in Nashville. It was hilly and lots of winding road at the beginning and we weren't sure if we could do that for 444 miles. It got better within about 15 miles and we thoroughly enjoyed driving at 50 mph. We stayed at two... More

We have visited and stayed several times. The park has a variety of lodging options plus a nice restaurant. We have met many nice and friendly employees from all lines of work. I recommend visiting their website and seeing all the activities and options they have available.

Very nice pool area with plenty of space. Smaller pool for little ones. Clean. Rooms are not large and most will find the bath and vanity area on the small side. We were happy we had a 2nd connecting room. A real treat was the horse ride at the equestrian center. Restaurant not open on Sunday night. We'd take picnic/sandwich... More

Key points to know.. 1) Bring an air mattress to put on top of the mattress on the bed, it will help a lot.. 2) Bring Off.. Lot of ticks if you are in the grass or hiking.. 3) Bring your own food. The restaurant is horrible.. Don't even think about it.. 4) Bring a bicycle, great places to ride... More

We spent two nights in a rustic cabin in Nov., which was our first stay in the park, which is a beautiful place. Despite the fact that most of the cabins, which are located right on a lake, were empty, they inexplicably put us in one of the least desireable in terms of location--back from the lake. The bed in... More

The facilities were acceptable but as guests in the off season, we found ourselves to be servants of "the rules." We thought we could stay in the guest cabins for the week of our stay while my husband was resting in preparation for his hip replacement surgery and our subsequent relocation to the local area within the next two weeks.... We stayed at Campsite 2 which is near the lake. The site has power, water, and a decent bathroom. If you fish on the lake there, you don't have to have a license. It's a self-registration site as well - you just show up, find a place and a ranger will come by to collect the fee. We really enjoyed... More
