The museum is housed in an authentic old western jail built in 1885 and located just off the northeast corner of the town square. The museum preserved the upstairs jail cells and hanging gallows just as they were when the County used it as a jail. The main floor houses exhibits on Hood County history covering David Crockett's descendants, General Granbury's tombstone, the Colony, Jesse James, John Wilkes Booth, Bell Starr, Comanche Peak, Barnard's Trading Post, the Brown family piano, and much more. It is recommended to call museum in advance.

I thought we were rushed through the museum, but my friend couldn't wait to get out of there! If you like touring jails, this is the place for you. No hangings took place here, but you can see where they would have occurred. Original graffiti, peeling paint, no windows, layers of iron doors--not for young children.

You can't beat the $2 admission price. This place is full of history and supposedly haunted. I have to say, the upstairs jail cells were extremely creepy! I got the shivers countless times!!

I just called the number listed above and it is NOT the correct number. The Correct number is 1(817)573-5135. Also...the lady at the museum said that the hours are from 1 - 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. However, since the museum is run by volunteers, she suggests that you call before going.
